Christmas break, I say that like I'm still in college or something, anywho...
we're heading down to bunk in at Connie and Lane's for the weekend. Which means extra hands to help with crazy 16 month old, which means free time for me to snake my dad's jumbo recliner and sit back with a book.
A BOOK,
I MIGHT HAVE TIME TO ACTUALLY READ A BOOK!
So I need some recommendations. I want a book that will keep me enthralled, that is not hugely time consuming or major difficulty to get through, I am not down with that for the time frame I have. Some sadness is okay, though I vote no for generally depressing since it is the holiday season and all.
Now it's your turn, talk to me people.
I recently read "The Help"just for the sake of reference, I know, I'm a bit late on catching that train...

26 notes:
The Hunger Games! The premise sounds depressing but after you get into it you can't put it down!
I can help you with this!
Eat, Pray, Love is a great vacation book.
Three Cups of Tea is a great "expand your world and see how amazing people are" book, but reads like a novel.
The Guernsey Literary...Society has a good old school feel. Love it!
The Year of Living Biblically is one of my favs from this year.
You HAVE to read The Hiding Place if you haven't already. Heartbreaking, but so SO good!
Obviously, I could go on and on, but I'll stop now. I love a good book!
"The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"
"The Girl Who Played With Fire"
"Skeletons at the Feast"
These are the last three books I've read. The third is unrelated to the first two but what I'm currently reading (by "currently" I of course mean I'm lucky to get in a chapter a week) and enjoying. Oh, and they're not really feel-good books, but the suspense keeps your mind going!
Enjoy a little free time! You deserve it! xoxo
Dude, my mind is BLANK. I can offer you a little bit of help in the form of a book you should NEVER, EVER read. "Push", by Sapphire. It's the book on which the movie "Precious" is based. For the love of all that is holy, never touch it.
Fig, out.
If you haven't read 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society' yet, it's super fast and upbeat.
'These is My Words' by Nancy Turner is also UBER Fab! and fun.
Have a great time!!
Hunger games and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society!! I haven't read either, but my mom hasn't been able to stop talking about them. They are on my To read list soon!
Yes to Hunger Games, Girl w/ Dragon Tattoo. Also, there is a new Jasper Fforde coming out this week...
The Hunger Games. Easy read...requires minimal thinking and very entertaining.
p.s. you might just have to take "Catching Fire" down with you...the second book to Hunger Games...yeah...it sucks you in.
Austenland is an easy, fun read or Book of a Thousand Days, both by Shannon Hale. Heck, I'd recommend anything by her.
I'll be tackling A Christmas Carol this holiday season.
The William Goldman abridged version of "The Princess Bride". Such clever writing.
The James Harriot series, starting with "All Creatures Great and Small". You are a farm girl and you would like these books.
If you don't mind the F bomb, an interesting read is "Cooked" by Chef Jeff Henderson. It's the story of how he went from dealing crack, going to jail, learning to cook in jail and is now the executive chef at Cafe Bellagio in Vegas. Such an amazing story.
The Kite Runner...it may make you want to cry for 12 days on end but it's a REALLY good book
I was going to suggest some magazines...cause they have some fun pictures to look at.
I should jot down some of these books for myself...I never know what to read, hence the magazine suggestion. :)
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
The Book Thief.
Trust me on these.
Please don't read anything with a vampire in it. Please.
I don't know, Rachel, The Historian had a vampire and it was a white-knuckled read.
I've heard "The Help" is excellent.
But you should totally read Hunger Games. So good!
I'll put in a plug for my cousin's new YA book out today - The Dark Divine (disclaimer: there are werewolves, but no vampires).
Well, I was going to say Hunger Games, but looks like everyone and their mom beat me to it.
I'm going to say The Bible. So you can get a nap in. Der!
Again...Hunger Games.
Ahem. I realize I'm breaking away from what everyone else is recommending, but might I suggest "One for the Money" by Janet Evanovich. Hilarious. The whole series. However, there is some swearing that takes place, and I know how you really don't appreciate that, so... ;) Love you Kalli! Tell Connie and Lane Hi for me!
Everyone already beat me to "The Guernsey Literary and PPP society"... so good. You would appreciate the wit.
I second the motion for "The Book Thief" It's my favorite book ever.
I also second the motion for "The Princess Bride" but beware that the asides are so ridiculously and mind-numbingly stupid in the book. I just skipped them.
And again, seconding the motion for anything Shannon Hale, although "Book of a Thousand Days" is my fave, followed by the very lightweight but entertaining "Austenland"
Sorry I had to cancel on our dinner plans tonight, but I'm glad you didn't come. The Hubby has been flat out in bed puking and other stuff all day... hasn't eaten since lunch yesterday. You sure don't want to catch that at Christmas.
um, when do you think you'll return my copy of the book thief, you book thief? and did you not know that louise rennison's final georgia nicholson book (are these my nunga nungas i see before me?) is out? i read it in 3hrs. because i love her.
and you.
happy christmas, kal.
kim is making me read- Hunger Games.- swears it is amazing (she doesn't read much so it must be) I just bought it but need to finish my current one first- "mistress of the art of death"- good so far. I also highly recommend an old swedish childrens book called, "Ronia the robbers daughter"- beautifully written.
It is too embarassing to admit the last book I read. So I will recommend a great book I have read in the last several month. The Shack. No it isn't a biopic of Shaquille... though I am sure that is thrilling it it's own right.
I know this is late, but in case you ever get down time again . . .
Get on Goodreads and add friends - I get all my best book ideas from there.
So, some of my faves: the Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsale (way better than the movie because she is BRITISH!), I will ditto the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, I loved "Agnes and the Hitman" by Jennifer Crusie (She has many books I like). "Playing for Pizza" by John Grisham. My caveat here is that these books all have some sex and some swearing.
For more intellectual reading: The Giver by Lois Lowery, The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith, The Very Persistent Gappers of Frip (very short), The Teacher's Funeral : A Comedy in Three Parts by Richard Peck (any of his are great), or anything by Georgette Heyer.
I could offer more but I think you need to get on Goodreads.
Books I loved
The Help
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The Girl who played with fire
Water for Elephants
Looks like I might have to read Hunger Games
